A Push Button Switch is one of the most common control components used in industrial machinery, electrical panels, automation systems, and control equipment. Although the device appears simple, choosing the right push button requires more than selecting a color or mounting size.

Engineers need to consider the operating method, contact configuration, rated voltage and current, installation dimensions, environmental protection, housing material, and the function of the control circuit. A switch suitable for a start command may not be appropriate for emergency stopping, while a standard indoor button may not provide enough protection for a dusty or humid environment.

This guide explains the main Push Button Switch types, their working principles, key specifications, and practical selection factors to help engineers choose the right switch for industrial applications.

What Is a Push Button Switch?

A Push Button Switch is an electromechanical control device that changes the state of an electrical circuit when an operator presses its actuator.

In industrial control systems, push buttons are commonly used to send commands such as:

  • Start
  • Stop
  • Reset
  • Jog
  • Power ON/OFF
  • Mode control
  • Emergency stop

The push button itself usually controls a signal circuit rather than a large electrical load. In many industrial systems, the switch sends a control signal to a PLC input, relay, contactor, or motor starter, which then controls the main equipment.

How Does a Push Button Switch Work?

When the operator presses the button, the actuator moves the internal contact mechanism. The contacts then open or close according to their configuration.

With a momentary push button switch, the actuator returns to its original position when the operator releases it. A latching push button switch, by comparison, maintains its changed state until it is operated again or manually reset.

The basic construction usually includes a button head or actuator, housing, contact block, terminals, mounting hardware, and, for illuminated versions, an LED or lamp module.

Common Types of Push Button Switches

Different industrial applications require different operating mechanisms. Understanding the main Push Button Switch types is the first step toward correct selection.

Momentary Push Button Switch

A Momentary Push Button Switch changes the circuit only while the button is being operated. Once released, an internal spring returns the actuator and contacts to their normal position.

Momentary switches are commonly used for:

  • Machine start commands
  • Reset functions
  • Jog control
  • PLC inputs
  • Temporary operating commands

For example, a machine start button normally needs to send only a temporary signal to the control circuit. The PLC or contactor logic then maintains the machine’s operating state.

Latching Push Button Switch

A latching or maintained Push Button Switch remains in its changed position after being pressed. Depending on the design, pressing the button again releases it and changes the circuit back to its previous state.

This type is useful for applications requiring a maintained ON/OFF command rather than a temporary signal.

Typical applications include equipment activation, lighting control, mode control, and auxiliary industrial circuits.

Wuce’s Yellow Metal Round Button Switch is a useful example of this operating principle. It uses a maintained switching action: pressing the button changes and holds the state, while another operation releases it.

Normally Open and Normally Closed Push Button Switches

The contact configuration is another important consideration.

A Normally Open Push Button Switch, or NO switch, has an open circuit when the button is in its normal position. Pressing the button closes the contacts.

NO contacts are widely used for start commands and control signals.

A Normally Closed Push Button Switch, or NC switch, operates in the opposite way. The contacts are closed in the normal position and open when the button is pressed.

NC contacts are commonly used for stop commands and control interruption.

Contact TypeNormal StateWhen PressedTypical Use
NOOpenClosedStart, signal
NCClosedOpenStop, interlock
NO + NCMixed contactsBoth change stateMulti-function control

Engineers should choose the contact arrangement according to the electrical control logic rather than relying only on button color.

Illuminated Push Button Switch

An Illuminated Push Button Switch combines switching and visual indication in one component.

LED illumination can indicate conditions such as:

  • Power ON
  • Machine running
  • Standby
  • Fault
  • Active operating mode

When selecting an illuminated switch, the LED operating voltage must also match the control circuit.

Metal Push Button Switch

A Metal Push Button Switch is commonly selected for industrial machinery and control panels where mechanical durability and a robust surface are important.

Compared with many standard plastic designs, metal switches can provide a durable operating surface and are suitable for frequent manual operation. Waterproof versions are also available for demanding industrial environments.

For compact installations, products such as Wuce’s Push Button Metal Switch provide an example of a small metal button suitable for equipment panels where available installation space may be limited.

Emergency Stop Push Button

An Emergency Stop Push Button should not be treated as simply another red push button.

Emergency stop devices are designed to be clearly identifiable and quickly operated when machinery must be stopped because of an abnormal or dangerous condition.

A typical design uses a large red mushroom head. Many emergency buttons use a maintained mechanism so the button remains activated after being pressed and requires a deliberate reset operation.

For example, the Wuce Emergency Push Button uses a red mushroom-style actuator with manual rotation to release the button after operation.

The emergency stop component and the overall safety circuit should always be selected according to the machinery’s actual safety requirements and applicable standards.

Key Electrical Specifications Engineers Should Check

Mechanical dimensions are only one part of Push Button Switch selection. Electrical compatibility is equally important.

Rated Voltage and Current

Check whether the switch rating is suitable for the actual AC or DC control circuit.

The required switching capacity depends on the load. A push button connected to a PLC input has different electrical requirements from one controlling a relay or contactor coil.

The switch’s rated voltage and current should therefore be evaluated against the actual circuit design rather than selected according
